Spiritual Gifts, Genuine or Counterfeit?

AN INTRODUCTION

Many people today are searching deeply for meaning, direction, prosperity, love and peace through different spiritual practices. Many of these paths often make promises, yet still leave questions unanswered in the heart.

The transformation of the heart is essential to our belief in God and our walk with Him because Scripture teaches that the heart is the center of our thoughts, desires, faith, and actions. This transformation of the heart is also essential to understanding and operating in the spiritual gifts described in 1 Corinthians 12. The Holy Spirit gives different gifts to believers, including the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, working of miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, different kinds of tongues, and the interpretation of tongues. While there are many gifts given by God throughout the Bible and we specifically reference those in 1 Corinthians 12, these gifts are not given to elevate ourselves but are manifestations of the Spirit for the benefit of others.

Therefore, the condition of our heart matters greatly when we exercise spiritual gifts what flows through our ministry will be influenced by what is within us. A transformed heart seeks God's glory rather than personal recognition, trusts God rather than human understanding, and uses spiritual gifts in love, humility, and obedience. The gifts may be supernatural, but they must flow through surrendered vessels; therefore, spiritual maturity requires both the development of the gifts and the continual transformation of the heart by the Holy Spirit.

Jesus steps into that search not as another option to try, but as the One who is Truth and speaks truth that brings rest to the soul. His invitation is not about condemnation or confusion, but about relationship, transformation, and life that is grounded in something unshakable. This journey is about discovering who He is and why so many find in Him what they were searching for all along.

Yet, as we seek spiritual truth, another important question emerges. How do we know what is genuinely from God? In a world filled with spiritual experiences, teachings, gifts, and practices that can appear meaningful or even supernatural, Scripture calls us to discern rather than simply believe. The Bible teaches that spiritual gifts are given by God for a purpose, but it also warns us not to accept every spiritual claim without testing it. If Jesus is the truth, then His Word must become our standard for recognizing what is genuine and what is counterfeit. So how can we tell the difference and what does the Bible teach us to look for?

God is the source of what is true, good, and spiritually life-giving. Because Scripture is His Word and His Word is our standard of truth, we can learn to distinguish what comes from the Holy Spirit. After reading through this, you will be able to use Scripture as a test to evaluate whether a claimed spiritual gift, teaching, manifestation or spiritual experience is consistent with God’s character and Word.

1. Can You Tell the Difference?

Someone tells you, ‘God has given me a spiritual gift, and you need to accept what I am saying because this ability is supernatural.’ How would you know whether it is genuinely from God?”

Consider these questions:

  • What would you use to test the claim?

  • Is something automatically from God because it is supernatural?

  • What standard would you trust?

The Bible gives us a standard. Before we can recognize the counterfeit, we need to understand the Source of what is genuine.

2. Who Is the Source?

When you see something that has been created, what does that tell you about the Creator?

Must Read:

  • Hebrews 11:3, Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God…

  • Genesis 1:31, And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.

God's Word is connected to creation, truth, life and goodness. The God who created by His Word is also the God whose Word establishes the standard by which we evaluate spiritual claims.

3. What Is Our Standard?

Scripture becomes the test.

Must Read:

  • John 1:1, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

  • Hebrews 4:12, For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword…

God's Word is truth and God's Word is our standard, therefore a spiritual experience does not get to judge Scripture. Scripture judges the experience. A counterfeit is designed to look genuine. That means the question is not merely, ‘Does this look spiritual?’ The better question is, ‘Does this agree with God's Word?’”

Scripture Test

A claimed spiritual gift or spiritual manifestation should be tested against:

  1. God's Word

  2. God's character

  3. The truth about Jesus

  4. The fruit it produces

  5. The purpose for which spiritual gifts are given

1 John 4:1-2, Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,

This gives the learner the biblical action, TEST.

4. Use the Test

Someone demonstrates an unusual spiritual ability and says, ‘Because this is supernatural, it must be from God.

Apply the Bible test.

Step 1 — Don't Automatically Believe It

1 John 4:1, Try the spirits whether they are of God.

  • Question: What does the Bible tell us to do?

  • Answer: Test it.

Step 2 — Compare It With God's Word

Isaiah 8:20, To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

  • Question: Does the teaching or manifestation agree with Scripture?

Step 3 — Examine the Fruit

Matthew 7:16, Ye shall know them by their fruits.

Question: What is this producing?

  • Is it producing: truth?, love?, obedience to God?, humility?, Christlike character?…

  • Or is it producing: deception?, pride? confusion?, manipulation?, departure from Scripture?

Step 4 — Remember the Purpose of Gifts

1 Corinthians 12:7, But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

Spiritual gifts are not given merely to make someone appear powerful or important. They are given for God's purposes and the good of others.

PAUSE & PONDER

5. Don't judge God's Word by an experience; judge the experience by God's Word.

What spiritual claim, teaching, experience, or influence in your life should you learn to test more carefully against Scripture?

Memory Principle - SOURCE → WORD → TEST → FRUIT → PURPOSE

  • SOURCE: Does it come from God?

  • WORD: Does it agree with Scripture?

  • TEST: Does the Bible tell me to accept it or test it?

  • FRUIT: What does it produce?

  • PURPOSE: Does it serve God's purpose or glorify a person?

This week, whenever you encounter a spiritual teaching or experience, don't ask only, ‘Does it seem supernatural?’ Ask, ‘What does the Word of God say?’”

Core Scriptures to Remember

  • Hebrews 11:3 — Creation came through God's Word.

  • John 1:1 — The Word was with God and was God.

  • Hebrews 4:12 — God's Word is living, powerful, and discerning.

  • Genesis 1:31 — God saw His creation and declared it very good.

  • 1 John 4:1 — Test the spirits to determine whether they are from God.

  • Isaiah 8:20 — Test teachings by God's Word.

  • Matthew 7:16 — Spiritual claims can be evaluated by their fruit.

  • 1 Corinthians 12:7 — Spiritual gifts are given for the benefit of others.

 REFLECT, RECALL & APPLY

As we learn to distinguish the genuine from the counterfeit, Scripture also invites us to look more closely at the gifts God gives His people. Spiritual gifts are not simply abilities to discover, they are invitations to serve, grow, and participate in the work of Christ. This leads us to a deeper question: How do we cultivate a life that is continually shaped by God? That is where the spiritual disciplines become essential, leading us into the wisdom and practices explored in Celebration of Discipline.
